The name name “GAZA” has become huge popular in media whether it is in bulletin’s headlines or front story of any tabloid or news papers। The Gaza is common name in every household of the world. Lets look at this what it is and why it has become so popular।
Gaza strip is a narrow piece of land just 40 km long and between 5km and 10 km wide attached with Israel and Egypt to its south. Over 1.4 million Palestinians lives here. In 1993 , an accord was finalized between Israel and Palestinian political representatives in Oslo, Norway, which phased transfer of governmental authority to Palestinians was to happen. According the accord, Israel retained control of air space, territorial offshores, offshore maritime access, imports and exports and so on. Israeli forces left Gaza city and other areas in 1994 and a new Palestinian athrority led by late Yasser Arafat took over administration of the strip. However, it was not until 2005 that Israel actually removed all Israeli settlements and military bases in the Gaza Strip. By September 2005, it formally declared and end to Israeli militarily rule.
If we go to its long history we get the mid 16th century till the first world war, Gaza was part of Ottoman Empire। After the war Gaza became a part of the British mandate of Palestine. Soon after Israel declared its independence in 1948, Egypt moved in to the Gaza strip, sparking off the Arab-Israeli war of 1948. in 149, Israel and Egypt came to an agreement by which the strip was occupied by Egypt from 1949 till 1967, except for a brief occupation by Israel for four months in 1956. in1967, war broke out againbetween Egypt and Israel and thइस time Israel occupied the Gaza Strip and held on to ittill 1994.
Israel with drawn people in Gaza had to contend with the sanctions imposed by Israel। Israel’ blockade and the resulting international isolation have left them in a dire economic situation. Rafah crossing is Gaza’s sole contact with the outside world not under direct Israel. Officially goods can enter from Egypt by the Kerem Shalo crossing and from Israel via the Sufa and Karni crossings, both of which are controlled by Israeli army. This continued control has allowed the Israeli state to control the inflow and out flow of Gaza’s essential resources, including food, and often led to severe shortages. In the elections held in January 2006, Palestinians voted overwhelmingly for Hamas, the militant islamist Palestinian group. This led to Isreal , the EU and US which consider Hamas a terroirist organization cutting off aid to Gaza strip leadind to its economic collapse. Hamas does not acknowledge the existence of Israel and continues to fire short-range homemade rockets, which can reach bear by Israeli population centres, such as Sderot, less than a kilometer from Gaza’s north-east corner.
These days you can see how many peoples have been killed in this conflict. And still this un-humanitarian process is going on. No one to take care no one to think about this. Even the UN council is also tight lipped. No concrete steps has been taken yet from their side.
